Follow Up on X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Just got back from the 11:30 am showing of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I'm not a comic book geek, so much of the revelations and back story were all new to me, which was good for a change. I'll try to keep this review spoiler free, but I will say that the trailer revealed too much for my taste. That's just the way things are in the movie world now.

I enjoyed the movie. Hugh Jackman continues to be a good choice for the character. The scenes they show of him fighting in all the wars in the trailer, all take place within the first 5-10 minutes of the movie. I was hoping for a bit more on those parts, but I don't think they wanted this to become another epic-length film like Watchmen.

We see Logan as a child, and his tragic beginnings. Then quickly jump forward to a roving band of mutants. The rest of the plot lives in this same time frame. There are twists and turns. Nothing that's jaw-droppingly clever, but enough to keep it entertaining.

I don't have any major issues with the movie. I do wish Wolverine's claws looked a little better. Also, there's one shot at the end of a group of mutants that's so obviously CGI that it's distracting. Other than that, nothing else made me shudder.

As far as action movies go, it's a fun ride. Better than X-Men 3, that's for sure, but not as enjoyable as say Iron Man. I don't know how they do any other origin movies, but I'm sure they'll try. I give it three claws up out of four.

Now I have to finish getting ready for Penguicon. Just found out that Wil Wheaton caught the flu, and isn't going to make it. He also couldn't make it to the first Penguicon I went to as a attendee. I'm bummed, I was looking forward to meeting him finally. I guess I'll just have to step up, and represent the geek writers of the world. I'm not sure I'll be able to grow a beard in time though.

That's all I've got for now. Stay geeky!
