  The end of innocence (Culture)

Culture
My name is Gisano and I live in Uzlamastan.  I am 15 years old and I am persecuted in my country.  I am persecuted because of my beliefs.  The police and their henchmen actively harrass my family.  While my family and others like us suffer in my country the rest of the world turns its eyes away.

Before I turned 12 my father was taken away by the police in the middle of the night, and thrown in a prison camp.  From reports we got through the underground, we found out that my father had died after weeks of merciless torture.  My mother has tried to protect us from the same fate, but just last month my older brother was abducted.  We fear that he too will befall the same fate as my father.  All this because we do not support the current tyrranical leader.

Since I was blinded in a severe beating several months ago, it has been harder for me to help my mother take care of my two younger sisters.  I use my one good arm to make small pottery vases that we sell down at the market, but even my hideous scars from the whippings do not elicit enough sympathy from passersby to keep us from being hungry.   Every week as I stumble back from the market on my toeless feet I know that after we buy the medicine for my sister off the black market we only have enough to by a single kilo of rice per week.

While we suffer, the US government and its citizens pay no attention.  We have no oil.  No natural resources to speak of, so we are ignored.  I am trying to use this forum to bring attention to my country, and hope that you, the citizens of America can contact your leaders and tell them of my country's plight.  We need your help.

True persecution (none / 0) (#19)
by stnick on Tue Feb 27th, 2001 at 01:07:21 PM EST

Your stories of torture and persecution are nice and all, but that's nothing like what I've been through.  I'm am a recovering caffeine addict in an office where coffee is a religion.  Even decaf has a little bit of caffeine in it so I must avoid it.  My co-workers taunt me every day with their hot cups of java.  Calling me "decaf boy", and "the caffeine-free-ak".   It hurts, it really hurts.

Consider walking a mile in my shoes before you start your next pity party.

The end of innocence????

That's just a little too much for me.  How about "Please Help Uzlamastan".

I live in the US, but I thought I'd let you know that your request for help was a little too US-Centric for me.  There's a whole world out there who might be willing to help, but you limit your request to just the US.  Oh and America is more than just the United States.  Get a clue.

Give me a reason to care (5.00 / 6) (#2)
by shrinkrap on Tue Feb 27th, 2001 at 12:34:13 PM EST

You're a blind, toeless, starving, one-armed, persecuted, fatherless Uzlamastander, yet you can figure out how to get to a computer an post your cry for help.  I don't think your life is really as bad as you portray in your post.  Maybe if you looked on the positive side of life then things woudn't be so bad.  Until you get a better attitude, I've really got little incentive to care.

I didn't want to say this, but the other site already posted your story.

As Sam Kinison used to say.
